When Caitlin Clark Could Set New National Scoring Record
The Caitlin Clark point-watch continues. This weekend, she's likely to pass another native Iowan and move into ninth place on the all-time scoring list. The question is, when could she sit alone at the top? Here's the current forecast.
In 111 career games, Caitlin Clark has scored 3041 points. She's just 20 points away from being the ninth-highest scorer in the history of women's basketball.
Clark's points per game average during her career is two things... incredibly consistent and, somehow, still on an upward trajectory.
During her first season in Iowa City, Clark scored 799 points in 30 games, a 26.6 per game average.
As a sophomore, Clark's scoring average crept up to 27.0 per game, when she scored 863 points in 32 games.
Last season, as she led Iowa to the national championship game, Clark averaged 27.8 points in 38 contests. She put up 1,055 a season ago.
Through the first 11 games of her senior season, though she does have a year of eligibility remaining, Clark has averaged 29.5 points per game. Clark has signed a bevy of NIL deals and is getting unparalleled attention nationally.
A non-conference game in Iowa City earlier this month brought out actor Jason Sudeikis and former WNBA great Sue Bird.
Saturday night (December 16) when Iowa takes on Cleveland State at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines (6 p.m. on Big Ten Network), Clark is likely to pass former Iowa State Cyclone Ashley Joens for ninth on the all-time scoring list.
Joens was born in Cedar Rapids and played high school basketball at Iowa City High before playing five seasons (2018-2023) at Iowa State. In 158 games as a Cyclone, she scored 3,060 points.
If Clark continues to average 29.5 points a game this season, she'll pass Kelsey Plum (3,527) in late February to become the nation's all-time leading scorer. On her current pace, Clark would do it against Illinois on Sunday, February 25, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
Many people probably believe there's no way Clark can continue to score almost 30 a game the entire season. Those people don't know the fire and heart of Caitlin Clark, the best player women's basketball has ever seen.
