A field trip to Lake MacBride has ended in tragedy for an Iowa City Elementary School.

CBS2 reports that one adult is dead and one child remains missing after an incident at Lake MacBride during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip, according to the Iowa City Community School District and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to the emergency call at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday to a report of people in the water near the Coralville Reservoir Spillway.

First responders recovered an adult from the water at around 12:43 p.m., according to CBS2. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. Crews searched for the child into the evening but were suspended overnight. Search efforts will resume this morning. Authorities have not released the identities of the person who died or the missing child.

Iowa City School District Offers Support For Students

In a statement, the Iowa City School District stated that the emergency response was connected to what it described as a tragic accident involving the Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade field trip.

We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that occurred today during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy.

CBS2 reports that counselors and additional staff will be available at Borlaug Elementary to support students and staff.
