15 Cedar Rapids Schools Will Offer FREE Meals To Students
As the school year quickly approaches some students and parents in the Cedar Rapids School District got some good news Monday. 15 schools within the city will be offering FREE meals for students for the upcoming year. No income guidelines. No forms to fill out. No questions asked.
The 15 schools are scattered throughout the city. Specific schools qualify for the free meals for students if more than 40% of their student body are at risk of going hungry, are in foster care, are homeless, or receive food stamps.
The elementary schools in Cedar Rapids that will offer the free meals include Cleveland, Garfield, Grant, Grant Wood, Harrison, Hoover, Johnson, Kenwood, Taylor, Van Buren, and Wright. Middle Schools receiving free meals are Roosevelt, McKinley, and Wilson, along with Metro High School.
Usually, parents have to fill out forms that state they fall within income guidelines to get free meals for their kids. That meant that some kids didn't get the food they needed because their parents never filled out the forms. It also eliminates the stigma that can come when students get free or reduced meals. Now, every student at the schools listed above gets to eat for free, regardless of their situation.
