Walmart’s Decision To Eliminate Greeters Proving Unpopular
It's been about one week since Walmart made the announcement that they were going to eliminate the position of greeter 1,000 of its U.S. stores. The company says the greeter job will be replaced with what's called a customer host. Greeting people will be part of their job, but they'll also be required to help with returns, prevent shoplifting, and help clean the front of the store. They may also be required to lift heavy items as well.
That had many people concerned because a large percentage of Walmart greeters have disabilities. They clearly wouldn't be able to transition to the position of customer host putting many out of a job. Many are protesting the move saying it's unfair to people who have disabilities. Online petitions have been signed. Walmart is finally responding.
Greg Foran, president, and CEO of Walmart stores in the U.S. says that they are "taking some specific steps to support" greeters who have disabilities. He said in a memo that was made public yesterday that "any associate in this unique situation that wants to continue to work at Walmart, we should make every effort to make that happen." Walmart says that it has already started making job offers to greeters with disabilities.
