Hundreds of John Deere Workers Head Back to Work in Iowa
Several stories this week have mentioned companies cutting positions. Finally, we have one where a large company is hiring. And that company is John Deere.
John Deere Hiring Workers in Iowa
The Des Moines Register reports that John Deere is once again hiring in Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas. In a news release, John Deere announced that it is recalling more than 275 workers and hiring another 400 more. The Register reports that John Deere stated the recalled workers will fill roles at its Waterloo plant, its largest tractor factory.
The company stated that Deere facilities that will be hiring will include;
- Harvester Works in East Moline, Illinois
- John Deere Seeding Works and John Deere Cylinder Works in Moline
- North American parts distribution in Milan, Illinois
- Davenport Works, Dubuque Works, and Ottumwa Works in Iowa
- Coffeyville Works in Kansas
Why Is John Deere Hiring?
If you think that the ag economy has suddenly rebounded, think again. High interest rates and high costs are still plaguing the industry. But The Register reports that John Deere views the hiring and recalls as a move to better position the company for customer needs and for future labor negotiations.

The Register reports that in August, the UAW said members rejected John Deere's offer to extend their collective bargaining agreement for two years, alleging Deere was outsourcing jobs. UAW officials say they want to see every one of the 1600 workers on layoff back at work, or negotiations in 2027 could prove to be difficult.
