University of Iowa Program Teaches Skills For Trade Jobs

That's advice we hear a lot, and the University of Iowa is helping teach skills for trade jobs in the area. A representative from a local carpenters' union in Iowa City says they always have a hard time filling positions. More people are going to college instead of the quicker turnaround offered by learning a trade like construction, which makes it tough to recruit people.

About 5,000 veteran Midwest carpenters are expected to retire within the next five years, so now is a crucial time to get people ready to step in.

The Quality Pre-Apprenticeship Program begins January 7 and will help people seeking jobs in the skilled trades qualify for a registered apprenticeship in the Cedar Rapids area. Employees work as apprentices before they are promoted to a journeyman position, which comes with increased pay.

The program is free and will have 30 spots available. You'll take classes three days a week in Coralville to earn OSHA, CPR, and other certifications required for these jobs along with tours of different workplaces in Cedar Rapids to get a look into what they entail.
