It's good to live in Eastern Iowa! According to a new study by U.S. News & World Report, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been ranked the best hospital in all of Iowa! Not only that, but the local hospital is also ranked nationally in seven adult specialties and four children's specialties.

So how exactly do they determine these rankings? The article states:

"To help patients decide where to receive care, U.S. News generates hospital rankings by evaluating data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, 9 adult procedures and conditions and 10 pediatric specialties."

The adult specialties that ranked nationally include:

  • Ear, Nose, and Throat - 3rd
  • Ophthalmology - 7th
  • Orthopedics - 14th
  • Cancer - 18th
  • Urology - 34th
  • Pulmonology - 39th
  • Gynecology - 50th

On the other hand, here are the four children's specialties that were nationally ranked:

  • Pediatric Nephrology - 28th
  • Pediatric Cancer - 36th
  • Pediatric Orthopedics - 46th
  • Neonatology - 49th

UI Hospitals and Clinics was also rated "high performing" in four different adult specialties and four procedures and conditions. According to the article:

"To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients. The ratings in procedures and conditions, by contrast, focus on typical Medicare patients."
