*This story is from January 31, 2019... the coldest morning in Cedar Rapids history.

Just how unusual are temperatures like we saw across Iowa this morning? So rare that it's virtually impossible to find a thermometer that goes that low on our photo provider, Getty Images. Twenty-five degrees below zero was as low as I could find, and that isn't low enough.

Cedar Rapids recorded its coldest temperature in history this morning when it dropped to -30! The previous record was January 15, 2009, when Cedar Rapids hit -29. Before today, that was the lowest temperature ever recorded in Cedar Rapids. We also obliterated the record low for today, itself. Our previous record was -21, in 1996.

Yesterday (Wednesday, January 30), the daytime high in Cedar Rapids was -14. That was just one degree shy of the all-time coldest daytime high in the city's history. The mercury rose only to -15 on February 2, 1996.

So there you have it. We've survived the coldest weather in Cedar Rapids history. I don't know about you, but I'm glad we're putting it in the rear view mirror. A forecast that includes temperatures in the upper 40's this weekend, with rain, sounds terrific.

January 30 and 31, 2019 will truly be two days we'll never forget, and neither will history. Let's hope the numbers stand up for a LONG time.

Below is what it looks like in downtown Cedar Rapids this morning.
