The P.A.C.T. Pack is Free Disaster Preparedness from the City of Cedar Rapids
If a disaster strikes, what do you do and where do you go? It would depend on what kind of disaster and where you are. So many things would need to be taken into account to decide what to do. Many of us, though not advised, may wait until the point of disaster to figure out those details. The City of Cedar Rapids with the help of Cedar Rapids Fire and Police Departments, is giving you resources like the P.A.C.T pack.
What is a P.A.C.T pack?
P.A.C.T stands for Prepare, Act, Communicate and Train. The city feels that though we may not be able to pinpoint when a disaster will happen there are ways to be prepared like, learning about different types of emergencies, learning how to respond to those emergencies, developing a family emergency plan, building an emergency kit, and also getting involved in your community to train for emergencies and volunteer help after a disaster.
Many years ago my wife and I put together an emergency kit. We also talked about something as simple as where to meet if there is a disaster should we be separated. As we talked we realized we both had different ideas of where we would go if there was a disaster. We are now on the same page but after a recent move will need a little updating. You have to start somewhere.
What goes in a disaster kit?
The kit is nice because if an emergency does arise, you can grab it and go. Ours has non-perishable food (we switch it out, I think) cat food, tortoise food, a flashlight, batteries, a huge note on the top that says MEDICATION. I have a few maladies, a few. The one thing that many of these lists leave off and this one did not is a manual can opener, very important. You can see what might be in a sample emergency preparedness kit here
