The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the state of Iowa has agreed to pay a former UNI football player $150,000 after he suffered significant injuries while participating in a research study held by another former UNI Panther, and former NFL player, Chad Rinehart.

Iowa City Regina football standout Phillip Arendt sued the state of Iowa in September of 2019 for negligence after he, a scholarship lineman for the University of Northern Iowa, was asked to take part in a graduate study program in March of 2017. All offensive and defensive lineman were asked to take part in the study which was being run by kinesiology professor Jacob Reed, and was being supervised by Rinehart, according to the Gazette.

Rinehart played for UNI from 2003 to 2007 and then was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the NFL in 2008. Rinehart was pursuing his masters degree in kinesiology at the time and was studying the correlation between weightlifting and on field technique. The Gazette reports that the lawsuit states that Rinehart was running the study that left Arendt unable to continue his football playing career.

The Gazette reports that the lawsuit states that Arendt became "dizzy from overexertion, felt dizzy, and hit his head." The fall resulted in significant injuries. As a result, Arendt was no longer able to play football and suffered from "post traumatic headaches and other symptoms."

Arendt, who is currently the strength and conditioning coach at Iowa City Regina, was awarded the $150,000 to help deal with past, present, and future medical costs, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of earnings, according to the Gazette.
