Cedar Rapids Schools Sues the State of Iowa for Millions
The Cedar Rapids School District is suing the state of Iowa to get money back for a program designed for at-risk students.
CRSD Sues State of Iowa Over Loss of Funding
The Des Moines Register reports that the Cedar Rapids School District is asking a judge to reverse an Iowa Department of Education decision that stripped the school district of millions of dollars for at-risk student programs. The Department of Education investigated allegations of the misuse of funds in those programs and determined that Cedar Rapids schools would lose $9 million in funding this school year, and for the 2026-2027 school year as well, according to the Register. Cedar Rapids schools are suing to keep the $18 million.
Anonymous Complaint Led to Investigation
The Register reports that a 22-page complaint sent to state and federal agencies is what caused the funding to be withdrawn. The complaint includes various allegations of misuse of funds and ethics violations. According to the Register, one such event was something called the superintendent's 'backyard dinner', allegedly paid for with funds meant for the district's at-risk student programs.
Cedar Rapids Schools Facing Financial Hardship
The lawsuit comes as the Cedar Rapids School District has already cut more than $12 million from the budget for the 2026-2027 school year, according to the Register. The district is also considering consolidating schools. A decision on that plan could come at the next district meeting on April 27th.
