The breaded tenderloin sandwich is an Iowa staple. You'll find them in all shapes and sizes. We even have a yearly contest to find out who has the best in the state! But one Iowa restaurant is getting some national attention for its tenderloin, which they've been serving the exact same way since the 1950s.

One Of The Best Sandwiches In the Nation

USA Today recently unveiled its list of the 'Best Sandwiches in the US'.It features sandwiches from coast to coast, and wouldn't you know a small diner in Iowa was chosen for its historic breaded tenderloin sandwich. That restaurant is Smitty's Tenderloin Shop in Des Moines. Smitty's has been serving its breaded tenderloin the same way since 1952!

What Makes Smitty's Tenderloins Great?

The Des Moines Register reports that Smitty's tenderloins fall right in the middle of what an Iowa tenderloin typically is. The pork is pounded thin and hangs off the bun, but still keeps a reasonable meat-to-bun ratio. The pork loin is run through a commercial roller several times, and then is breaded twice to preserve the crunch without losing the flavor, according to the Register.
