According to an announcement on it's website, the current population of killer whales in captivity at SeaWorld parks will be the last generation to be featured attractions. The statement goes on to say that "society is changing, and we are changing with it."

SeaWorld has come under fire for it's treatment of killer whales since the 2013 documentary 'Blackfish'. That film looked at the whale named Tilikum, who has been involved in three deaths at the park, including a trainer in 2010.

SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby said that many people still visit the parks wanting to see the orcas, but a large portion of the American population doesn't think the large mammals should be kept in captivity. Along with the orca breeding program coming to an end, the old theatrical shows will stop too. Instead, visitors can expect something called "natural orca encounters." SeaWorld is also partnering with the Humane Society of the United States to advocate for ocean wildlife protection.
