Read This Before You Buy Halloween Contact Lenses

Halloween contact lenses are becoming more and more popular each year, but before you buy them, there is something very important safety information you need to know.

Horror stories have been popping up all over the internet about people who bought cheap, non-prescription contact lenses and, as a result, developed serious eye problems. Some people have experienced severe eye infections, scarring on the cornea, and vision problems, including partial blindness. This can be easily prevented by purchasing contact lenses through the proper venue.

Dr. Thomas Steinemann, a professor of ophthalmology, says, "Most people believe that decorative lenses do not require the same level of care or consideration as a standard contact lens because they can be purchased over-the-counter or on the Internet. This is far from the truth." Many people who don't already have prescription contacts don't understand the risk involved with sticking these things in your eye. That's why it is illegal to sell non-prescription contact lenses in the US. Contacts are a medical device that require a prescription and a fitting from an eye care professional, EVEN IF you have perfect vision. Dr. Steinemann says, "Many of the lenses found online or in beauty salons, novelty shops or in pop-up Halloween stores are not FDA-approved and are being sold illegally." A word to the wise: do not buy contacts from any business that doesn't ask for a prescription.

Contacts lenses are not "one size fits all." Eyes come in all shapes and sizes, and you can do some serious damage if you don't take caution.
