Prepare for the Roar and Emotion at Kinnick: Brett Greenwood is Saturday’s Honorary Captain

It's been four years since former Hawkeye football player Brett Greenwood (#30) collapsed while working out at Pleasant Valley High School. He was the victim of a brain injury caused by a heart arrhythmia. Saturday night, he returns to midfield at Kinnick Stadium in what is sure to be an emotional moment.

Brett Greenwood is a fighter and a former player that fans have rallied around since that shocking day in September of 2011 when he collapsed. He was placed in a medically-induced coma for over a month. Since then he's been fighting, just as he's always done. Greenwood was a walk-on at Iowa that became a four-year starter at free safety. When his career ended, he was one of only three Iowa players to record at least 200 tackles (229) and 12 interceptions during his career. When his collegiate career ended in 2010, he was named a Permanent Team Captain.

The Quad City Times updated Brett's progress about a year ago and his sister Lindsey reported that he had begun walking only with the help of physical therapists, no longer needing a walker. His short-term memory was still a daily battle.

Brett Greenwood will be in the Iowa locker room before and after Saturday night's game and at midfield for the pregame coin toss. It'll be great to see him... undoubtedly through a few tears.
