One of the Midwest’s Best Burger Stands Will Close Soon!
The fall colors are peaking. It is the perfect time to take a drive north, see the colors, and the Mississippi River, and try one of the Midwest's best burgers before they close for another year!
For 112 years, Pete's Hamburger Stand has been open for business in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Pete Gokey began cooking hamburgers on a small stand in the summer of 1908 or 1909. His small stand eventually led to a larger trailer. Finally, Pete opened up the location that exists to this day at the intersection of Blackhawk Avenue and Beaumont Road in Prairie du Chien.
What makes Pete's Hamburgers so popular? They're only open while the weather is good. And the way the burgers are prepared is unique even today. The patties are cooked with onions and simmering water on a griddle. This keeps the burgers moist, and the onions cook right along with the burgers. You can smell the burgers cooking from blocks away!
The menu at Pete's is simple. Burgers. Soda, Chips. My first trip to Pete's Hamburger Stand was last year. The burgers appear small but let me tell you they are thick and filling! I could barely get through the two I ordered. They are among the juiciest burgers I have ever tried. If you want to experience Pete's for yourself you better make plans. You're running out of time!
The last weekend for the 2024 season will be October 18th to the 20th. Pete's will be open for only the next two weekends! You can stop by and grab a burger or two Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It's worth the drive!
