The Coralville Police Department says that a North Liberty man who was struck on his bicycle last month, and later died, was hit by a teenage driver that was on social media and speeding at the time of the accident.

Coralville Police Chief Shane Kron says that when 36-year-old Andrew Pavlovec of North Liberty was hit just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6, his bike was hit from behind by a vehicle traveling more than 20 miles per hour over the posted 35 mile-per-hour speed limit. Kron also said the 16-year-old female driver was "actively using a social media application" when the accident happened.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports Pavlovec was southbound in the 2400 block of 12th Avenue when his bicycle was struck while in the traveled portion of 12th Avenue. His bicycle was equipped with a working headlight and taillight at the time.

The teenager has been charged with vehicular homicide. Her name has not been released due to state law.
