Former Iowa Hawkeye star Payton Sandfort didn't hear his name called during the 2025 NBA Draft. But that isn't where his NBA journey will end.

Sandfort was a standout during his time at the University of Iowa. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the 6'8" Waukee native played four seasons in Iowa City and averaged over 16 points and 6 rebounds during his Hawkeye career. He was a deadeye three-point shooter, nailing 271 threes during his Iowa career. He also sank nearly 90% of his free throws. He was also reliable, starting all 67 games his final two seasons at Iowa, according to the Gazette.

Sandfort was seen as a long shot as an NBA Draft pick, and when he didn't hear his name called in Thursday night's second round, Sandfort went the free agent route. And out of all the teams he could have signed with, he inked a free agent deal with the newly crowned NBA champions!

Yes, Sandfort has joined the champions of the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder! The Gazette reports that he'll likely sign what is called an Exhibit 10 contract. That is a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum salary that allows teams to convert it into a two-way contract, or offer a bonus if the player joins their G League affiliate after being released.

The Gazette reports that Sandfort will likely play for the Thunder's NBA Summer League team. That league plays in Las Vegas from July 10th to the 20th.

Good luck making your NBA dreams come true, Payton!
