One Killed, Two Injured, in Crash On I-80 in Johnson County

A vehicle traveling the wrong way on I-80 Sunday night caused a three-vehicle accident that killed one person.

According to an accident report from the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred at 9:27 pm Sunday night. A 2013 Hyundai Sonata was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 234, which is between Oxford and Tiffin. The Sonata collided head-on with a 2016 Honda traveling west and a third vehicle, a 2015 Nissan, then hit debris from the crash.

Three people suffered injuries. The driver of the Sonata that was on the wrong side of the interstate was 32-year-old Stephen Lucore of Iowa City. He was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City by Iowa County Ambulance.

31-year-old David Sawyer of Frisco, Texas was driving the Honda. His passenger, 64-year-old Robert Sawyer was taken by AirCare to University of Iowa Hospitals, where he later died.

The 2015 Nissan was driven by 34-year-old Michael Griffin of Memphis, Tennessee. He was not injured.

58-year-old Mercedes Quevas was also injured and transported by AirCare to University of Iowa Hospitals. It is not clear from the accident report which vehicle Quevas was traveling in.

At this time, authorities do not know why the Sonata was on the wrong side of the interstate. The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the crash. They were assisted at the scene by the Iowa Department of Transportation, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Iowa City Police, Coralville Police, the Coralville and Oxford Fire Department's, Johnson and Iowa County Ambulance, and AirCare.
