New and Safer Breast Cancer Treatments Available in Cedar Rapids
We're gathering this weekend for a race that is a run/walk for breast cancer. The run aspect is for those who are in much better shape than I am. They have a family fun walk for those of us who like to participate but prefer not to be up early AND have to run. We prefer to keep it simple, one or the other. Well, just one actually and that is getting up early. Running is so physical and I'm getting winded just thinking about it.
This is one of Cedar Rapids biggest races for a cure for breast cancer and it's this Sunday. It's the Especially For You Race Against Breast Cancer, and there is still time to join us. We walk and run and some of us will meander and hope there's a donut shop along the route. Ok, two donut shops, and maybe a diner or another eating establishment. If you want to keep your energy level up, donuts.
What is new in breast cancer treatment?
The meeting place is Hall-Perrine Cancer Center at Mercy Medical, 701 10th St SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403. The races raise money for breast cancer research, patient care, and support. Hall-Perrine Cancer Center at Mercy Medical recently announced they are using new AI technology to make breast cancer procedures safer.

The software uses MRI scans to create detailed images of tumors. These images will allow doctors to view these cancerous cells more clearly and let them create a treatment plan that will fit the patient precisely.
How many people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year?
According to the American Cancer Society breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, aside from skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2024, there will be about 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women. Iowa's Department of Health and Human Services says breast cancer is the most common cancer in Iowa women, accounting for 25% of all new cancer diagnoses in women each year. In 2024, researchers estimate that 2,930 women in Iowa will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Getting screened early and regularly can improve treatment options and the chances of recovery.
Iowa has the second-highest and fastest-growing rate of new cancers in the US.
