Marble Among Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2021
Earlier this year, the family of Roy Marble expressed their frustration with the University of Iowa. The school announced that it would retire Luka Garza's number 55 jersey. Garza earned that honor by becoming the National Player of the Year as a senior, an All-American, and breaking Iowa's all time career scoring record. A record held by Roy Marble for 33 years. I even wrote about how I thought Marble should have his jersey retired and honored before Luka's is hung in the rafters of Carver Hawkeye Arena. We haven't made head way in that case, but the Marble family had to be pleased with some other news this week.
Roy Marble will be among those inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2021. Ten former Iowa Hawkeye athletes got the good news this week, and will be inducted on Friday, September 3rd, the evening prior to Iowa's season opening football game against Indiana, according to HawkeyeSports.com. Marble starred at Iowa during some of the best years for Iowa men's basketball. He was a three time All-Big Ten selection. He is one of just 27 Big Ten players in history to score over 2,000 career points. He also helped Iowa rise to the number one ranking in college basketball, and to their only 30 win season.
While I don't think this honor solves everything between the Marble family and the university, I feel that it is a good start. Marble's name is a part of the fabric of Iowa basketball, and he is a deserving hall of famer. Other member of this year's class include,
- Dan Bachman, Men's Gymnastics
- Kari Hamel, Volleyball
- Kristi Hanks, Softball
- Frank Holbrook, Football
- Kristen Holmes, Field Hockey
- Fred Mims, Administration
- Diane Nukuri, Track and Field
- Brad Penrith, Wrestling
- Ed Podolak, Football
