Luka Garza announced on Twitter Friday morning that he "will be declaring for the 2020 NBA draft." However, Iowa fans shouldn't panic. At least not yet.

Garza also said in his post that "throughout this process I will be KEEPING MY ELIGIBILITY." That's key. What Garza is doing is what Joe Wieskamp did a year ago. Testing the waters, if you will. Wieskamp ended up returning to the Hawkeyes.

Garza, the 6-foot 11-inch and 260-pound Iowa center, has one year of eligibility remaining with the Hawks if he decides to use it. He won't be hiring an agent for the NBA process, according to a media release from the Iowa Sports Information Department. If he doesn't like what NBA scouts say about where he might be drafted, he can return to Iowa City.

In his Twitter post, Garza gushed about his time with the Hawkeyes and how the NBA has been his dream since he started playing hoops. He said in the post, "If it ends up not being the right time to make the move to the NBA, I’m excited about the potential of what my senior season as a Hawkeye could have in store. Thank you to Hawkeye Nation for this unforgettable journey thus far.”

Garza, who became just the third first-team All-American in Iowa basketball history last month, averaged 26.2 points last season. He also netted a single-season Iowa record of 740 points.

In the Iowa release, head coach Fran McCaffery said,

Luka was one of the top players in the country last season and going through the NBA Draft process is something that he should absolutely do. We fully support Luka in the pursuit of his professional goals. This process is extremely valuable in gathering information from NBA personnel. My staff and I look forward to supporting Luka throughout the process.

Certainly every Iowa fan wants the NBA for Luka. He definitely deserves it. I'd just like to see his name called in 14 months, instead of two. The 2020-21 Iowa basketball season could be a special one with Luka Garza in the 5-spot. The center is often called the pivot, which would be fitting. Garza is definitely a pivotal piece.
