Linn County Reminds Drivers of ATV Rules of the Road

As the weather continues to warm this spring, more and more vehicles are hitting the roads. Motorcycles have become more common on highways, and so are ATVs. The popular All Terrain Vehicles have been a staple for outdoor enthusiasts for years. But just last year, the Linn County Board of Supervisors officially allowed ATVs on certain county roads.

CBS2 reports that Linn County officials are urging ATV drivers to re-familiarize themselves with the rules passed under that ordinance. The main provisions included:

• Operators of ATV or off-road vehicles must have a valid driver's license and be at least 16 years of age.
• An operator 18 years old and younger is required to take and pass an Iowa Department of Natural Resources ATV safety course and carry a valid safety certificate on them while driving.
• Drivers 18 years of age and younger must wear a helmet while operating an ATV.
• Operators of ATVs or off-road vehicles cannot travel at a rate of speed higher than 35 miles per hour.
• ATV operation may begin at sunrise and end at sunset.

The county does point out that ATVs may travel on a restricted roadway if it is the shortest way possible to get to a road that is unrestricted for ATV use.
