August 20th is National Radio Day. That's right. On-air personalities such as myself get one day each year to tell people that our profession isn't dead yet! Yes, radio faces new challenges, but there is a reason this old media format is still relevant, even to younger generations.

We Still Love Listening to the Radio

When you hop in your car to head to work or school, you have options. Streaming services, podcasts, and satellite. But Edison Research found that AM/FM radio continues to lead the way. In 2026, 55% of in-car audio time is spent listening to the radio. Streaming is a distant second at 16%, which is still a record high.

Why Do We Listen to the Radio?

According to RAB, statistics show that the number one reason people love listening to the radio is that it is FREE! Other top reasons included that it is easier than other audio formats and that it is part of their daily routine. The survey also found that people like listening to their favorite personalities, and they value the local news and weather information they receive!

The bottom line for me is that radio is still fun! Some days it doesn't even feel like a real job. Sure, we have meetings and deadlines just like any other profession, but we get to go to concerts, fairs, do live remotes, and talk with our amazing and loyal listeners!

I've been at KHAK for over 30 years now. Whenever someone asks what else I'd do other than radio, I honestly don't know. It has become more than a job. It's my career, part of my identity. Other than getting up at 3:20 a.m. every day, what's not to love?

Thank you for listening!
