The new tradition at Iowa football games is incredible. I was there for that first home game against Wyoming, and it was an awesome moment... one that will most certainly be topped during Saturday's prime-time game.

Saturday when Iowa hosts #4 Penn State in a nationally-televised game on ABC, the fans have hatched a different type of wave. Saturday evening, fans are asking everyone (including us) to spread the word to turn on their cell phone lights as they wave to the kids at the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Saturday's official sunset time in Iowa City is 7:00. The game kicks off at 6:42, which will likely have the first quarter ending, in darkness, between 7:10 and 7:20. That will work out perfectly for the very first night wave at Kinnick Stadium.

We've all been to a concert where fans turn on their flashlights during a slow song and wave them back and forth. It's very cool. Now, just imagine 70,585 fans waving them, in unison, to the kids looking on from the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Fans, please conserve those cell phone batteries during your tailgating on Saturday. You don't wanna be the one who has a phone that won't work. And to ABC-TV: Please do what your sister network (ESPN2) did last Saturday and don't go to a commercial break. Stay inside Kinnick Stadium so the world can see this special moment unfold on their television screens.
