When my wife and I got married, we never even discussed last names. It was just assumed that she would take my last name after we were man and wife. While it was something that we didn't discuss, many couples do, and more women than ever are choosing to keep their maiden name. 22% of women keep their name and do not take their husbands. Another 10% do the hyphenated version of both names. According to experts, this trend previously peeked in the 1970's and 80's for very different reasons. Women did it then as an act of individualism and as an act of feminism. Ask a woman now why she chose to keep her own name? Many will say that it might make it too hard to find her on social media. Many women are waiting longer to get married, and have established themselves professionally. Why confuse people with a name change? Women are also more likely to keep their name if they are older, already have children and are not religious.
