Well it looks like the DOT may have some explaining to do.

According to the Des Moines Register, an Iowa judge has ruled that Iowa Transportation Department officers don't have the legal authority to issue a speeding ticket.

If the ruling stands, legal challenges to tens of thousands of tickets issued by Iowa Department of Transportation officers could follow with millions of dollars at stake.

Being relatively new to Iowa, I was not aware that DOT could issue speeding tickets. I assumed that only police officers, sheriffs and state troopers were the ones who had that authority.

But Sixteen-year-old Peyton Atzen and his parents recently fought a speeding ticket, issued by a Transportation Department officer. So now it looks like a showdown is inevitable with the DOT likely to appeal the decision.

I'm not going to condone speeding, but don't you think the procedure and protocol should be reviewed and perhaps updated?
