Former Hawkeye Star Gets College Football Coaching Job
Former Iowa Hawkeye defensive star Joe Evans has landed his first college football coaching position, right here in the state of Iowa.
The Des Moines Register reports that Drake has hired Joe Evans to be the defensive line coach for the Bulldogs. Newly appointed Drake head coach Joe Woodley made the announcement on Tuesday. Woodley noted that Evans "learned under some of the best defensive line coaches in the country...His intensity and enthusiasm will be infectious with our guys."
Evans attended Ames High School and was a walk-on at the University of Iowa. The Register reports that he worked to turn himself into an All-Big Ten player. He recorded 135 tackles and 28 sacks in his Iowa career. He helped Iowa to a 10-win season during his final year at Iowa in 2023. The Register reports that Evans spent a short time with the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL before starting his coaching career.
Evans stated that he is "humbled and blessed" to start his coaching career at Drake, according to the Register. He said that his goal is to build and grow the football program at Drake. He won't be the only former Hawkeye on the Bulldog staff. The Register reports that Hawkeye player Adam Cox is also on the Drake staff as the defensive coordinator. Cox played at Iowa from 2011 to 2015, and the Register reports that he was a member of the Hawkeye's Leadership Council as a senior.
