For years, the residents of Cedar Rapids have been openly wondering what would become of the location that was once home to Ryan's Buffet and Steakhouse.

Excitement mounted in 2019 when we discovered that the popular Raising Cane's chicken restaurant would take over the spot. After the anticipation of them coming to Cedar Rapids, and the pandemic putting their plans on hold, they seemingly bowed out at that location, noting they would be looking to set up shop elsewhere in Cedar Rapids, due to some changes. It then opened its first Corridor location, in Coralville last April.

We've now received word that the plans are back on, in the same spot as initially planned. The only difference we know of so far will be who owns the restaurant. Construction on Raising Cane's has started at 230 Collins Road NE, and according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the restaurant will now be owned by the company itself, as opposed to a franchisee named Southern Hospitality Ventures. Building permits were reportedly approved on July 20, and the second Corridor Raising Cane's location is scheduled for a late December opening. With any luck, it may be open in time for you to stop for lunch during your Christmas shopping, although Corridor Business Journal's report pushes that opening into January 2023.

When the new Raising Cane's on Collins Rd. is completed and opened it will become the restaurant's seventh location in Iowa, following Altoona, Cedar Falls, Coralville, Council Bluffs, Davenport, and West Des Moines.
