Iowa's fastest growing city increased in population 6.5 percent in the last year, making it number three in the entire nation for growth.

The Des Moines Register reports the U.S. Census Bureau says the population of Ankeny in July of 2014 was 53,299. They estimate the population in July of last year at 56,764.

Ankeny, located north of Des Moines, has doubled its population from 27,117 in 2000 to 56,764 last year. It's not slowing down either, with an unprecedented 2,240 building permits approved last year.
