The strangeness of 2020 has penetrated everything in our lives, including high school football. While many states haven't had a season, Iowa's has been very different with a number of games canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests. One of tonight's quarterfinal games has been canceled due to coronavirus.

In Class 4A, there will be no rematch of last year's championship game featuring West Des Moines Dowling Catholic and West Des Moines Valley. According to the Des Moines Register, Valley announced Thursday that they would not be able to play the game because of positive coronavirus cases. That puts Dowling into 4A's final four teams. Two squads from the Corridor hope to join them. Iowa City West plays at Pleasant Valley tonight while Cedar Rapids Kennedy travels to Southeast Polk. The other 4A game tonight features Ankeny visiting Waukee.

In Class 3A, Cedar Rapids Xavier hosts Grinnell tonight while Manchester West Delaware hits the road for a game at Eldridge North Scott. The other two games feature Boyden-Hull/Rocky Valley at Webster City and Lewis Central visits Harlan.

The Class 2A match-ups tonight feature Solon at Waukon, West Liberty traveling to Camanche, State Center West Marshall hosting PCM Monroe, and Inwood West Lyon at George Little Rock-Central Lyon.

The final eight teams in Class 1A include my alma mater Sigourney-Keota, who hosts Waterloo Columbus Catholic. The other matchups tonight are Underwood at Van Meter, South Central Calhoun visits Southeast Valley, and OABCIG entertains Hawarden West Sioux.

In Class A, Iowa City Regina will host Fairbank Wapsie Valley, Grundy Center travels to Britt West Hancock, Council Bluffs St. Albert visits Logan-Magnolia, and Saint Ansgar will welcome MFL MarMac.

Finally, in the 8-Player tonight it's Gilbertville Don Bosco at Janesville, Montezuma hosts Easton Valley, Anita CAM travels to Fremont-Mills, and Audubon visits Remsen St. Mary's.

All of tonight's games begin at 7 p.m. and will feature ideal weather conditions for players and fans alike. It's a good thing next week's games move indoors, to the comfort of the UNI-Dome. High temperatures next Thursday are expected to be in the mid-40s. That's the first day of semifinal games in Cedar Falls. They'll be played Thursday through Saturday, November 12 through 14. Championship games will be held on Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20.
