In an effort to make college campuses safer, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a new law allowing stun guns to be legally carried on college grounds.

CBS2 News reports the law takes effect July 1.

While it's already legal for anyone over the age of 18 to carry a stun gun under current law, colleges had been exempt and were able to adopt policies that ban certain weapons from campus.

CBS2 News also said the Iowa Board of Regents issued the following statement:

"Student safety has been, and will continue to be, a top priority for the Board and its institutions. Making our campuses the safest environments possible, which allows for high-quality learning, is something we take seriously," said John Lehman, senior communications director for the Iowa Board of Regents.
