Iowa’s Highest Point? Exactly Where You’d Guess!
If you're feeling brave this summer, might I suggest booking a trip to the highest point in the state of Iowa. Fortunately, you won't need oxygen or a Sherpa guide.
Iowa isn't exactly known for large changes in elevation. But we aren't just a state full of flat cornfields either. Sorry, Nebraska. There are rolling hills, stunning river valleys, and rocky bluffs along the Mississippi. But if you're wondering where the highest point of elevation in Iowa is located, you probably won't be surprised to find out its in the middle of an Iowa farm field.
Where is Iowa's Highest Point?
Welcome to Hawkeye Point! KTIV reports that the Iowa Army Corps of Engineers decided back in the 1970s that it was the highest point of elevation in the state of Iowa. Just how high are you at Hawkeye Point? 1,670 feet above sea level. I doubt you'll get a nosebleed.
What Else Will You Find at Hawkeye Point?
Aside from the marker, more attractions have been added to Hawkeye Point since 2008. KTIV reports that it now acts as a welcome center for those visiting Osceola County. You can visit an observation deck, a corn crib museum, and even check out some antique farm machinery. And if the hike to Iowa's tallest peak took a lot out of you, there is now a campground with 12 sites, according to KTIV.
Where Can I Find Hawkeye Point?
Hawkeye Point is located four miles North of Sibley, Iowa, on the East side of Highway 60. It's nearly a five-hour drive from Cedar Rapids, but think of the view you'll get when you arrive!
