A Hiawatha family is astounded because the city sent them a notice telling them they need to get rid of their pet ducks.

In a post on change.org, Brent and Kristine Sorenson say they received a "Notice to Abate Nuisance" from the City of Hiawatha about the ducks. The Sorenson's have six ducks they've had for five years "with no issues from my neighbors," according to the post. They go on to say the city wants them to get rid of them because,

They're considered livestock and livestock is not allowed in the city and because they said there was a complaint. The only thing we can think of is the water department guy that came through our backyard, turned us into the City of Hiawatha. All of our neighbors denied turning us in and are all happy to sign a petition to keep our pet ducks... The only issue is the city does not want me to have them."

The Sorenson's have appealed to the city and they claim the city is "asking that we pay $150 to have a meeting with the council."

Their online petition is certainly receiving support. As of this writing, there are more than 1800 signatures, with a goal of 2,500.

What do you think? Should the Sorenson's be allowed to keep their ducks? Should the City of Hiawatha change their ordinance, which currently DOES NOT allow for chickens? Leave us your feedback below.
