Put the Phone Down! Police Can Issue Fines January 1st!
A new Iowa law regarding cell phone use in your vehicle went into effect July 1st. But starting January 1st, law enforcement can start issuing fines if they pull you over. Happy New Year.
New Iowa Law Involving Cell Phones
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Iowa's 'hands-free' cell phone law went into effect on July 1st. Under the law, drivers are not allowed to use their hands to operate cell phones or other handheld devices. You are allowed to use your phone in hands-free mode only. The goal is to cut down on distracted driving and prevent accidents due to drivers texting or talking on their phones.
The Soft Launch of the Law Will Soon Be Over
The law took effect on July 1st with a soft launch until the end of the year, according to the Gazette. If pulled over, officers would only issue warnings for cell phone use. But that period ends when 2025 does. Starting January 1st, 2026, if you are pulled over for using your cell phone while driving, you could face a $100 fine.
How Many Warnings Have Iowa Law Enforcement Issued?
According to the Gazette, the Iowa State Patrol has issued over 8,000 warnings from July 1st through October 31st. Other law enforcement agencies have also issued their share of warnings.
- Linn County Sheriff - 48
- Cedar Rapids Police - 16
- Iowa City Police - 90
- Polk County Sheriff - 143
Just remember, all those warnings turn into fines as of January 1st, so HANDS OFF THE PHONE!
