Sinkhole Causing Problems on Eastern Iowa Golf Course [WATCH]
On a golf course, my ball tends to find all the available hazards. Sand trap? Yes. Water? Absolutely. Tree line? Of course! But at one Eastern Iowa golf course, another kind of hazard has appeared. A sinkhole.
Local golfers and neighbors are voicing their concerns about the sinkhole that has appeared at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque. KWWL reports that the sinkhole actually appeared one year ago. Concerned citizens wonder why nothing has been done to repair the giant hole.
KWWL reports that Dubuque's City Leisure Services Department says that Bunker Hill sits on top of an underground limestone mine that was used hundreds of years ago. The 11-foot-deep sinkhole reveals a limestone shelf, which means that something collapsed, exposing the mineshaft.
The sinkhole is near hole 17 on the golf course and officials told KWWL that they blocked it off when it was discovered. But some wonder why it is taking so long to get fixed. One neighbor told KWWL that when it first appeared, the sinkhole was the size of a basketball. Now it is much larger.
The city of Dubuque has confirmed that they are working with the engineering department to get the sinkhole fixed. KWWL reports that they are preparing a request for a proposal from an outside company to get the sinkhole fixed. City officials also say that the sinkhole is not increasing in size.
In the meantime, you might want to watch out for that extra hazard on hole 17 at Bunker Hill.
