Eastern Iowa Businesses Offer ‘Floatation Therapy’ – What is it?
How do you feel about spending 90 minutes floating in a tank of total darkness and silence? Let me introduce you to Floatation Therapy!
Floatation Therapy is also known as Flotation Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (R.E.S.T.) or Sensory Deprivation Tank Therapy. According to Cedar Rapids business Total Rejuvenation, it "involves being partially submerged in pool of super-saturated Epsom salt solution for up to 90 minutes to elicit a deep relaxation effect. The pool contains more then 1,200 lbs of Epsom salt (Magnesium Sulfate) to effortlessly suspend your body on the surface creating a near zero gravity effect. The pool is enclosed in a large tank that blocks sound, light and maintains a precise air and water temperature to match your surface skin temperature."
Total Rejuvenation says that some of the benefits of Floatation Therapy include lower blood pressure and heart rate, reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, reduced muscle tension and pain, and an "enhanced ability to enter meditative states." Some people even claim they've had epiphanies while floating.
As far as possible disadvantages, Health.com says that "more research is needed to understand how flotation therapy affects overall health, especially if used long-term." They also note that some people may have hallucinations while floating, which could worsen anxiety or paranoia. The site recommends that people who experience claustrophobia or have epilepsy, low blood pressure, or infections/open sores consult a healthcare provider about Floatation Therapy.
Total Rejuvenation offers Floatation Therapy in both float pods and float rooms, with the rooms slightly larger than the pods. They are located at 1501 51 St NE in Cedar Rapids. You can get more information about their services HERE.
Another area business that offers Floatation Therapy is Iowa Recovery Room. It's located at 1509 Mall Dr in Iowa City. Check out their website HERE.
