Iowa Defense Will Get Its Sack Leader Back in 2025!
It's the time of year when football player news can be good and bad. Players entering the portal. Programs getting new players from the portal. Star players declaring for the NFL Draft. And yes, really good players announcing that they are coming back for one more year. Iowa got some great news of that kind on Monday.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Cedar Rapids native Ethan Hurkett will return for his sixth year with the Iowa Hawkeye football team. The former Cedar Rapids Xavier star has had a career year with the Hawkeyes leading the team in tackles for loss at 11.5 and sacks at 6.5 according to the Gazette. He is also tied for the team lead in forced fumbles with 3 and was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by both the media and coaches.
Hurkett has appeared in all 12 games for the Hawkeye this season, after playing in all 13 last season according to the Gazette. The Music City Bowl will be his 42nd career game and 13th start for Iowa. This is the final senior class of players who have the option of using an extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gazette reports that Iowa center Logan Jones has also announced that he will return for his sixth year at Iowa in 2025.
