The 'Dog Days of Summer' will heat up in a big way this week as dangerous temperatures return to Eastern Iowa.

The old saying in Iowa is that it isn't so much the heat, it is the humidity. We'll definitely feel the humidity for the next several days. Our weather partners at KCRG TV-9 report that due to the high temperatures and high dew points, an excessive heat watch will go into effect later this afternoon and last through Thursday.

High temperatures today are expected to reach the upper 80s and low 90s, with heat indices reaching 100 or higher during the afternoon, according to KCRG. That kind of heat will last right through Thursday.

If you do have to be out in the heat, there are some things you can do to keep yourself safe.

  • Don't overdue it outdoors.
  • Wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
  • Don't leave people OR pets in vehicles or areas without air conditioning!

KCRG reports that with the hot and humid weather, there is also a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, but they will be isolated at best.

The heat continues until Friday, when highs will reach the mid-80s.

To put together our list of the most popular water parks, we took a look at parks with a 4.4-star or higher rating on Google and 500 or more total reviews (additional water parks with 4+ stars are listed at the end). Some of them are MASSIVE water parks with a seemingly endless number of slides and attractions, while others are small (but very nice!) aquatic parks run by city governments. Whatever type of park you're looking for, you have plenty of options!
