Another dream of many athletes is on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Organizers of the 111th Drake Relays, held in Des Moines, say they were holding onto hope of having the event this summer but had to make the difficult decision to call it off. They postponed it the first time in March to see how things would pan out, but according to KCRG, director Blake Boldon says it's not going to work out.

Athletes regularly come from far and wide, including some past participants from here in Iowa like World Champion Joey Woody and Olympian Lolo Jones, to compete in the Drake Relays track and field events every year. It's unfortunate to know this year's crop of participants won't get to see the fruits of their labor come to fruition this year.

Next year's Drake Relays will take place April 21-24, 2021.

Fans who had tickets to attend the Drake Relays are being contacted about options. Those options include donating their ticket fee to the Relays to help keep them running, no pun intended, in the future, bank their purchase to attend next year's event or receive a refund. You'll have until August 17 to make the choice.

Two events surrounding the Drake Relays have gone virtual. The Drake Road Races can be completed by participants between September 27-October 7, while the Grand Blue Mile can be completed between September 29-October 7.
