Authorities are investigating the death of an infant in Washington County over the weekend. According to a release from the Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Communications Center in Washington County received a call Saturday, March 24 at around 10:23 a.m. reporting that an infant had stopped breathing. The infant, which was at a home in rural Ainsworth, was taken to Washington County Hospital and Clinics, where the child was pronounced dead. The release does not state if the infant was a boy or girl.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Decedent Care Center is conducting an autopsy on the infant. The release from Washington County also states the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Washington County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the incident and that no additional comment will be made until the investigation is concluded.

Such a sad story and it's our hope that foul play wasn't involved. Just last month, a central Iowa man was charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment after his 2-month old daughter stopped breathing and died. Calvin Curtis White, 29, of Nevada was charged with suffocating her with pillows. He allegedly admitted killing her in a recorded phone message.

The girl's mother called 911 the afternoon of Monday, January 29 after coming home and finding the child not breathing. Just 15 minutes after she called authorities, White was hit by a train going through Nevada. That Friday, February 2 White was released from the hospital. He was then arrested and charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment.
