Could Tolls Be Coming To Interstate 80?
One thing Iowa motorists don't have to worry about is traveling on toll roads. I remember my first time driving to Chicago and having to stop and pay the toll. That experience might just be coming to Interstate 80.
A new report from the Iowa Department of Transportation says that adding tolls along I-80 could help offset the price of rebuilding the roadway. The estimated cost of that project is $3.8 billion. It would include widening and rebuilding I-80 between 2022 and 2026.
The project would be paid for with by toll fees over 35 years. Cars would be charged eight cents per mile while trucks would be charged twenty-four cents per mile. The DOT report says that 11 toll stations would be installed along the interstate in Iowa. Why go with tolls? The DOT says that current state and federal highway funds simply aren't enough to get the proposed project done.
