The city of Waterloo is asking its residents to skip Halloween trick or treating this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to KCRG. Iowa's eighth largest city says it is simply following the recently laid out recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

KCRG reports the city of Waterloo has told citizens that they should not participate in door to door trick or treating, parking lot based trunk or treating events, indoor costume parties, haunted houses, and hayrack rides, as they consider those activities to be at a high risk for spreading COVID-19. So what are people supposed to do to celebrate Halloween in 2020? The CDC website offers these suggestions on attending fall and holiday gatherings.

  • Outdoor activities are safer than indoor ones.
  • Make sure your host has up to date guidelines on how to slow the spread of COVID-19.
  • Bring supplies to keep you and others safe. That may include extra masks and hand sanitizer.
  • If attending an in person holiday gathering with people outside your household, consider avoiding contact with people outside of your household for 14 days prior to the event.

KCRG reports that the city of Waterloo is suggesting safer activities like having treat bags ready for kids that are away from your home. A neighborhood trunk or treat, with cars in driveways and NOT gathered in a parking lot was another suggestion that was made. In 2020, we all need to take the extra steps to make Halloween safe. Kids deserve a little fun this fall.
