City of Cedar Rapids Latest Flood Update Information
The Cedar River is projected to crest at 23 feet at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. The river will reach major flood stage, 16 feet, in the early morning hours Monday. It is now more than 12 feet, its official flood stage.
The city of Cedar Rapids flood protection process is nearly complete. Efforts have been made throughout the city for flood protection on both sides of the river. Public Works crews and contractors have worked around the clock on flood control efforts. Cedar Rapids city leaders thank the public for the incredible outpouring of effort in helping with sandbagging and other necessary tasks around the city. It is also much appreciated how the public has heeded the call to avoid the downtown and surrounding areas, helping construction and emergency vehicles easier access. Preparation on the temporary flood control measures are anticipated to be completed by tomorrow. The Hesco walls that have been built in many areas will also be wrapped to provide them additional structural support.
Three sandbagging sites are operational and open overnights for the public to access sandbags. That information on the sites is available HERE. Sand and other supplies are replenished at these sites as possible if depleted. They will stay open until no longer needed.
All planned road closures and restrictions are currently in place for flood protection measures and safety. The latest on road closures is available HERE. Park CR has opened gates on all downtown parking ramps. Parking is free.
Solid Waste and Recycling
Garbage, recycling and yard waste will not be collected next week within the evacuation area. All other areas will receive normal collection. If you're in the evacuation area, you're asked to secure your carts before leaving, if possible. More info on collection in this area will be provided after the river crests.
Evacuation & Curfew Information
Cedar Rapids is asking residents and business in affected areas to evacuate by 8:00 p.m. tonight. A map of the evacuation area is available HERE. Those in the flood evacuation area are receiving direct notification via the Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS).
