5-Year-Old Student Wanders Away from Cedar Rapids School [WATCH]
It is a parent's worst nightmare. A Cedar Rapids family is angry after finding out that their 5-year-old daughter walked out of her elementary school on Monday and no one at the school realized she was gone.
That young girl's father, John Thompson, appeared before the Cedar Rapids School board on Monday evening to make them aware of the situation. According to CBS2 Thompson stated that his 5-year-old daughter thought that she got in trouble at recess so she left and tried to find her brother. Unable to locate him, she assumed that he left without her. That is when the young girl simply walked out of the school.
CBS2 reports that Thompson went on to state that his daughter walked all the way down to 42nd Street before a stranger noticed her and ended up taking the young girl home. Thompson said that he didn't get a phone call from the school until 10 minutes after his daughter got home.
You can tell in the video that Thompson is trying to hold it together, and as a parent, I get it. I can't imagine if one of my daughters walked out of school at the age of 5, and wandered around a busy neighborhood unnoticed. Why did no one see her walking alone in the halls of the school? Why wasn't she stopped before leaving the school?
CBS2 reports that Thompson could be seen having a private meeting with school board officials. The Cedar Rapids School District has not yet commented on the incident.
