Cedar Rapids Man Accused of Sexual Assault at Restaurant
According to a police complaint, a woman was in the ladies restroom of Jimmy John's on Washington Street in Iowa City at around 2:30 a.m. on August 5 when 20-year-old Grant Ajango of Cedar Rapids entered the room. According to the complaint, Ajango allegedly grabbed the woman, slammed her against the wall, and performed a sex act without her consent.
After the victim's cell phone had fallen out of her pocket, she was able to pick it up and text "help" to her friends. Restaurant employees and the victim's friends were able to force the door to the restroom open. The complaint says they saw Ajango holding the woman against the wall and that his pants were around his ankles.
Ajango, allegedly, tried to run, but employees and friends of the victim were able to catch and hold him until authorities arrived on the scene. He faces charges of third-degree sexual abuse which is a Class C felony with a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison. He's also been charged with false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor. He could face up to a year in jail on that charge. He's currently being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $60,000 bond. The bond is $10,000 for false imprisonment and $50,000 for third-degree sexual abuse.
