The Iowa State Legislature gave the Iowa Department of Transportation less money than it wanted in the 2016 budget. So that means the DOT will have to make cuts and closures to make up the budget shortfall.

The DOT will leave 67 positions open by 2018, which will create staffing shortages statewide. They will also be closing driver's license stations in Spencer and Carroll as well as maintenance garages in Akron, Centerville, Corning, Gowrie, Rock Valley, Sabula, and Soldier. The closures are effective September 1st.

Another side effect of the cuts and closures? According to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, rural residents may have to wait longer for snow removal this winter. The say the impact of that could be dangerous.
