Surprising Iowa DOT Reminder About Crashes in Snow
With the light snow that greeted us this morning, I'm thinking of the Iowa DOT reminder about crashes with snowfall less than 2 inches.
Rates of Crashes in Iowa
The Iowa DOT recently sent out a graphic that showed that, in less than 2 inches of snow, 75% of Iowa's crashes happen. If you look at the pic, a majority of crashes occur with just a trace of snow in Iowa. Seems that when there is little snow, drivers may not think they need to use caution.
One reader on the Iowa DOT Facebook page opined, "I feel like people think they don't have to use their winter driving skills with just a trace, and that's why it's the most deadly."
The Iowa DOT responded saying, "thank you for sharing this perspective—it’s supported by the data. That’s why we consistently share safety messages to promote safer driving in all conditions."
The same caution is used when it starts to rain, as it can bring out oils in the warm roadways that make them slick. Drivers must use caution so they don't slide around when their tires come into contact with these roadways and the oil that might be present.
Iowa's DOT Website is Interactive
If you would like to know the condition of Iowa's roadways during inclement weather or even during good weather, you can stop here. The Iowa DOT keeps updated road data for you to see 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, provided there is internet access.
You are also able to customize the DOT's website with the My511 portal. Setting up an account allows you custom access to Iowa DOT for the things you want and need.
