Big Ten Football To Resume Season In October

Hawkeye football fans can get their black and gold Iowa gear back out. The Big Ten football season, once left for dead, has received a second chance. The Gazette reports that a proposal to resume the fall football season in October has been approved. Are you ready for some Iowa football!?

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported the decision by the conference to resume the season. So when will play get under way? The Journal Sentinel said that the latest proposal suggested to Big Ten Presidents and Chancellors had a suggested start date of October 17th with an eight game season in a nine week window. However, the Big Ten has now announced play will begin the weekend of October 23-24. A Big Ten Championship game would then be held on December 19th. That would also allow the conference to be eligible for the College Football Playoff, which announces its field on December 20th.

So why the sudden change of mind on whether or not to play the season? One reason is simple. Money. If you remember, since the initial announcement that the season was postponed on August 11th, the University of Iowa had to cut four sports. With no football, Iowa's revenue fell from $120 million in 2020 down to $23 million next year. That is the power of college football.
