As Holly and I sat in the theater last night with the three kids, she leaned over to me and said, "This is the first time all five of us have gone to a movie together." I couldn't believe it. She was right. I'd taken Chase to movies before. She'd taken the girls to some in the past. But we'd never all gone at the same time. What was the movie that got the Brainard family to all go together? Pixar's new film Inside Out.

Our kids have grown up with Pixar movies. From the Toy Story movies to Monsters Inc. and Cars, they've seen them all. The great thing about Pixar movies, though, is that they are so relatable to adults. Two of my favorite Pixar movies are Up! and WALL-E. The kids enjoy them but I also really love the grown up themes hidden in them. The new movie Inside Out is in that same class. Sure there are moments that made the kids laugh out loud. But there were more that made the moms and dads laugh. And for an animated movie, there were plenty of moments when things got a little dark. Pixar has never been afraid to tap into your emotions and I think it makes for a better movie going experience. Two scenes in Inside Out had my wife and I tearing up. I won't reveal which two. You need to experience it for yourself.

It was a movie the whole family got something out of. How often can you say that these days. Plus, only one bathroom break in nearly 2 hours! Not bad for this family of five's first movie together.
